First Babies of the Year

On Sunday, February 21, 2021 a call came in about three baby Grey Squirrels laying in a yard. I told the woman to get a bottle of hot water wrapped in a cloth or put inside a sock, and put it in with the babies to keep them warm. They can not be hydrated or fed if they are cold. I was told she would be at my facility in about 43 minutes with the babies. But she never came. After talking to me, the women talked to a friend of hers that told her, “just put them back out with the bottle of hot water.” She did what her friend told her to do.

An hour and a half later when she went to check on them one was dead. That’s when she finally brought me two, now very critical babies. It took me three hours to get them warm enough to hydrate.

Friends, the weather conditions determine if it is OK to place babies back out for the mother to hopefully get. Snow and cold temperatures are NOT the right conditions to do that. These babies are not out of danger yet. As always I will do my best for them.

PLEASE, if a rehabilitator tells you that you need to bring a baby to them LISTEN!
